Everything is easy when we ship something: we get our FBW, the Electronic Air Waybill Message, and we often (not always) receive automatically a certain quantity of status that tell us if our shipping had a positive ending or if some anomalies occurred.
If the shipping’s responsbaility is ours until its destination, we are really interested in, but if we sell EXW or FOB, our interest will be lower, unless these anomalies won’t require anyway our intervention.
Instead, things change when we are the consignees waiting for a shipping: for every kind of INCOTERMS, we are interested in the wares’ destination; if we are a “consumer” consignee, we continuously say “we cannot wait for it comes”; then, “we want the certainty that it will arrive exactly when we expect it”, if we are an industrial consignee.
Being wares consignees, we have no one to tell us automatically where our wares are: we have to go and check the airline company website and, if we don’t have the FWB number, we have to ask to our forwarder who in turn will check the company website. If he got notice about our request, of course.
So, what can we do?
Just to start, if we don’t want to be totally blind, we have to accord with our forwarder in order he gives us our waybill data in real time.
At this time, we can imagine to create a simple mechanism which sends a message requiring the shipping status to the airline company (FSR) with a recurrence that fits our necessity and convenience. The airline company will answer in a very short time, sending a Freight Status Update (FSU) message with the code of the last progress in our shipping status and some additional info.
This mechanism is cheap and guarantees many advantages, first of all the benefit not to loose time to ask where our wages are. The system will do that for us, and it will eventually advise us if some problems occur (DIScrepancy), without disturbing us if everything is going according to plans.
Anyway, we have not to forget that in all this process there are also paper labels that are printed and attached to our shipping: so, if someone made a mistake in attach the correct “cargo label” on our package, the shipping results having been perfectly processed, even if we received a box of clothes instead of a computer.
The surgery was perfectly performed, but the patient died.
If we work with cargo freight, if we receive and send wages, adopting an automatic control system will make us able to optimize our human resources in productive tasks (researching new clients, problem managing) instead of loosing time with unproductive activities (as a status request is).
